Hemp is a bast fibre: the long, strong strands that run the length of the plant's stalk. They are separated, combed, spun into yarn and woven into the cloth you sleep on. The gentle irregularities in the weave are the signature of a real plant fibre, present in every length we make.
Small slubs and gentle variation run through the yarn. They are the natural mark of a plant fibre, not a flaw, and never affect how the cloth wears.
Hemp falls in a soft, lived in way and does not hold a pressed crispness. That easy crumple is part of its charm.
The fibre is long and strong, so the cloth feels grounded and reassuring on the bed rather than thin or slippery.
Fresh hemp has a slightly firm, earthy feel. Every wash relaxes the fibre, leaving the weave calmer and softer.

Hemp Care · Buying Guide
Hemp bedding means duvet covers, fitted sheets and pillowcases woven from the long fibre in the stalk of the hemp plant, one of the oldest textile fibres people have spun. Every Sensoire hemp piece is woven from 100% hemp. It is not a hemp and cotton blend, and there is no polyester in the cloth. The duvet cover and button pillowcases close with natural coconut buttons rather than plastic, and the finished fabric is OEKO-TEX certified, tested for harmful substances.
Choose hemp if you want the breathability of linen with a weightier, more substantial feel. All three are natural fibres, but they sleep differently. Cotton is smooth and crisp from the first night. Linen, woven from flax, is the lightest and airiest, with a dry, textured hand. Hemp is also a long stalk fibre, around 40% stronger than cotton, with a fuller drape and a natural texture that softens with every wash. Hemp and linen both move warmth and moisture more freely than a dense cotton sateen, so both suit warm sleepers. If you prefer the lightest weave, see our linen bedding.
Hemp grows quickly and densely and is cultivated without pesticides and with minimal water. It is a renewable plant fibre, and the finished bedding is made from 100% natural fibre.
It is vegan too: no animal-derived material is used anywhere in it, down to the thread and the elastic.
Years, and it grows softer through them. Hemp fibre is around 40% stronger than cotton, so the cloth keeps its body through weekly washing while the surface relaxes and softens. Two habits make it last longer still: rotate two fitted sheets so each is slept on and washed half as often, and keep hemp out of hot water and never over-dry it. Should anything be wrong with the quality of your bedding, we exchange or refund it free of charge within 14 days.
Yes. The fitted sheet is sold on its own, and pillowcases come single or as a set of two, with a coconut button or an envelope closure. You can build the bed piece by piece, keep a second fitted sheet to rotate, or add a single piece later without buying a whole set. The duvet cover set includes one duvet cover and two matching pillowcases, and a matching fitted sheet can be added in the options on the same page. Duvet cover sets come in seven sizes from 135 x 200 to 260 x 240 cm, fitted sheets in four widths from 140 to 200 cm, and every piece in Natural and White.
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons people choose it. Each hemp fibre has a hollow channel at its core, so the cloth takes up moisture readily and lets it go, while the open weave carries warmth away from the body instead of trapping it under you. On a warm night it stays dry and does not cling to your back. The duvet cover matters as much as the sheet: warmth from the duvet has to pass through the cover to leave the bed, so a hemp cover makes the same duvet feel lighter. On the hottest nights, some people sleep under the empty cover alone. See our edit for hot sleepers.
Hot flushes and night sweats are common through menopause. Bedding cannot change the cause, but it can change how the night feels. Hemp absorbs moisture and lets it move away from the skin, and its open weave dries quickly, so a flush is less likely to leave you damp and awake under the covers. Our menopause and night sweats edit brings hemp together with linen and silk for exactly these nights.
Yes, for most sleepers. Hemp feels gently cool when you first get into bed, a soft coolness rather than a sharp chill, then comes up to body temperature quickly. The same fibre that lets warmth escape in summer holds a light layer of it close in winter, so you stay warm without the damp, stuffy feeling of heavy bedding. It is a year round cloth: keep the same hemp cover and sheet, and change the duvet inside it for the season. If you sleep very cold, choose a warmer duvet rather than a warmer sheet.
New hemp has a dry, textured hand, closer to linen than to smooth cotton sateen, and it softens noticeably over the first weeks of washing and sleeping. It keeps its natural texture as it softens rather than turning slippery. No fabric softener is needed: use and washing do the work. If you are unsure how it will feel, start with a single hemp pillowcase: a week under your cheek tells you more than any description.
Hemp is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, and our fabric is OEKO-TEX certified, tested for harmful substances. It is a calm, natural choice for sensitive skin and for the whole household.
Machine wash it: hemp bedding needs no hand washing and no dry cleaning. Wash it once before first use, then weekly or every other week, on a short, gentle cycle in cold water, with Natural and White washed apart. Dissolve a mild liquid detergent in the water or the drawer rather than pouring it onto the fabric, as undiluted detergent can leave patches, and do not leave hemp to soak. Skip bleach, close the buttons and turn the duvet cover inside out. The first few washes may release a little loose fibre; wash hemp on its own for those and clean the machine filter afterwards.
Either works. You can tumble dry hemp on a low or medium heat, as long as you do not over-dry it: take it out as soon as it is dry, or while it is still very slightly damp, and shake each piece open. High heat and over-drying are what set hard creases, age the fibre and shrink the cloth beyond the allowance each piece is cut with. Line drying is just as good: hemp dries quickly on a line or rack, in the shade or in gentle sun, since long hours of strong sun can fade the colour.
A little, and each piece is cut with that in mind. Hemp settles and shrinks slightly in its first washes, so every piece is made a touch larger than its stated size, and a fitted sheet can feel generous until it has been washed. The fitted sheet has a fully elasticated edge for mattresses up to 40 cm deep, topper included. In the duvet cover set, the two pillowcases are 50 x 75 cm as standard, and you can choose one of eight other sizes when you order, including the square 60 x 60, 65 x 65 and 80 x 80 cm formats, so the set matches the pillows you already sleep on.
Yes. Like linen, hemp creases softly and naturally, and that relaxed look is part of its character. Remove it from the machine promptly and smooth it by hand if you prefer fewer creases.
The small knots and gentle changes in thickness you may see along the yarn are slubs, the natural signature of a plant fibre. They are not a fault and not pilling, so leave them be.
Rotate two sets, or at least two fitted sheets, so each is slept on and washed half as often, and turn the fitted sheet head to foot now and then. Keep zips, hooks and rough towels out of the hemp wash, and if a thread ever catches, ease it back from the reverse side rather than cutting it. If a dog or cat shares the bed, a throw at the foot keeps claws off the sheet. To store, fold each piece once it is fully dry and keep it somewhere dry and breathable, such as a cotton bag, rather than sealed plastic.
