And what can the seller show you before you pay?

Quick answer Start with the feel. If you enjoy a textured, slightly creased bed, linen deserves a closer look. Then check the fibre content, the size against your mattress and the care the sheets will need. GSM lets you compare lighter and heavier cloth. Certifications tell you where the flax was grown and how the finished fabric was tested. A single GSM figure won't tell you whether sheets are well made, and neither will the words "washed linen".

In this guide

Is Linen Bedding Right for You?

Pure Linen vs Linen Blends: How to Read the Label

What Does GSM Mean for Linen Sheets?

Washed Linen: Water, Stone, Sand and Enzyme Finishes

Before You Order: How to Check Linen Bedding

What Sensoire Linen Can Show You

How to Care for Linen Sheets

Frequently Asked Questions

01

Is Linen Bedding Right for You?

Linen is woven from flax, a plant fibre that is stiffer and stretches less than cotton. Look closely and you will see small thickenings in the yarn, called slubs, which are a normal part of the fibre. It creases as soon as you lie on it, and the creases stay. Linen is also slower to spin and weave. Weight plays a part, since a heavier sheet uses more fibre, and traceable, certified flax adds to the cost.

</details>
<details>

Are linen sheets worth it?

They are if you value breathability and texture and don't mind creases. Linen costs more than most cotton at the start and asks for cool washes and gentle drying. If you would rather have a smooth, pressed-looking bed, good cotton or silk will probably please you more.

</details>
<details>

How long do linen sheets last?

There is no standard lifespan. It depends on how often the sheets are washed, how hot and how they are dried, as well as on the weight and finish of the cloth. Cool washes, air drying and rotating two sets all help.

</details>
<details>

Are linen sheets good for winter?

Linen can feel cool for the first few moments, then warms to the body. In a heated bedroom and under a warm duvet, it can stay on the bed all year.
