Customers ask us the same thing almost every week: once the duvet needs freshening, can it simply be washed? For the great majority of traditional mulberry silk duvets the answer is no, and it is yes only for a small, very specific group of products. Below: why most silk duvets cannot be washed, what the washable ones are actually made of, and how a silk-filled duvet stays fresh for years without ever seeing water.

In short

Most mulberry silk duvets cannot be washed. Water and agitation press the air out of the silk fill, and the fibres clump, harden and in bad cases break down. A washable silk duvet does exist, but it is a thin, quilted summer weight, usually filled with tussah silk, sometimes given a water-repellent finish, and it has a shorter working life. For a full-weight duvet the routine is simpler: air the duvet and wash the cover.

Why can't a traditional mulberry silk duvet be washed?

In shortBecause washing takes apart the structure that makes silk fill work.

Mulberry silk fibre has a natural wave along its length. Laid down as a long-strand fill, layer over layer, those waves hold pockets of air between the fibres. The trapped air is what gives a silk duvet its loft, its softness, its warmth and its breathability, and it is the reason a good silk duvet feels far lighter than it is. How a silk duvet is made shows the layering step by step.

Put that fill in water and the fibres are compressed. The air is pushed out, and once wet fibres dry pressed against each other they mat into flat, hard sheets that do not spring back. In the worst cases the fibres break and turn powdery. At that point the duvet is finished, however good the silk was to begin with.

This is why the care label on a full-weight mulberry silk duvet says the same thing every time: do not wash. It is not caution for its own sake. It is the one instruction that decides whether the duvet lasts.

So what is a washable silk duvet?

In shortA thin, quilted summer duvet made to a different recipe.

A small number of products are sold as washable, and they meet several conditions at the same time. None of them is a secret; they simply describe a different product.

Very light fillMost are summer duvets carrying a few hundred grams of silk at most, so there is very little loft to lose in the first place.

Quilted throughThe fill is stitched to the shell in a tight grid so it cannot migrate or bunch while it is wet.

Tussah silkThe fill is usually tussah rather than mulberry silk. Tussah is coarser, and the working life of a duvet like this is typically two to three years.

Treated fill, synthetic shellSome fills are given a water-repellent finish, and the shell is usually a synthetic fabric rather than cotton, because a cotton shell can shrink and lose its shape in the wash.

There is nothing wrong with that recipe for a light summer layer. It is simply not the same object as a full-weight mulberry silk duvet in a cotton or silk shell, and the word washable on one label should not be read across to the other.

Two duvets, two recipes

Traditional mulberry silk duvet

Washable silk duvet

Fill

Long-strand mulberry silk

Usually tussah silk

Fill weight

Light through to winter weights

Very light, summer only

Construction

Layered long-strand fill inside its shell

Thin fill stitched in a tight grid

Shell

Cotton sateen or silk

Usually synthetic

Treatment

None

Often a water-repellent finish

Working life

Many years with everyday care

Typically two to three years

Care

Air it, cover it, blot spills

Gentle machine cycle, as the label directs

How do you keep a silk duvet clean without washing it?

In shortAir it, cover it, and treat spills on the spot.

Airing does most of the work. A few hours in a bright, shaded, well-ventilated place lets the fill breathe and release moisture; strong direct sun for hours is the one thing to avoid, since it can yellow the silk over time.

The duvet cover does the rest. A removable cover takes the body oils, sweat and dust that would otherwise reach the silk, and the cover is the part that gets washed, on its own, as often as your sheets. Silk covers and accessories have their own wash routine; cotton, linen and bamboo covers follow their labels.

Spills are blotted, never rubbed and never soaked. Anything that has gone through to the fill is a job for a cleaner who works with silk, not for a bathtub. The full routine, from seasonal storage to which stains need a professional, is in our guide on how to clean a silk duvet.

Does this apply to Sensoire duvets?

In shortYes. None of our silk duvets is a washable silk duvet, and that is deliberate.

Every Sensoire silk duvet is filled with Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk. The shell is either 100% cotton sateen or, on the pure silk duvet, 22 momme mulberry silk. The fill is the part that must stay dry; the shell is the part a cover protects. Cared for that way, a duvet like this keeps its loft for years, which is the whole case for choosing silk over a duvet you replace every few seasons.

If a lighter, washable summer layer is what you need, that is a fair choice, but it is a different product. What we make is the full-weight kind, and the care that goes with it is airing, a cover and a little patience.

Questions we hear most

<details>

Can you machine wash a silk duvet?

No. The agitation and the water press the air out of the fill and the silk fibres clump together. The loft does not come back after drying. Wash the removable cover instead and keep the silk insert out of the machine.

</details>
<details>

Can you wash a silk duvet by hand?

No. Soaking does the same damage as a machine, only more slowly: the wet fibres compress, then dry pressed together and harden. Blot a spill on the spot and let the area dry flat in a shaded, airy place.

</details>
<details>

What happens if a silk duvet gets wet?

Blot as much as you can with a dry towel, then lay the duvet flat somewhere shaded and well ventilated until it is completely dry. Do not wring it, do not tumble dry it and do not use direct heat. If the fill stays lumpy once dry, take it to a cleaner who works with silk.

</details>
<details>

How can I tell whether my silk duvet is washable?

Look at the label and at the duvet itself. A washable silk duvet is light, stitched through in a close grid, usually filled with tussah silk and finished with a synthetic shell. A full-weight mulberry silk duvet in a cotton or silk shell is not washable, whichever words appear in the listing.

</details>
<details>

How often does a silk duvet need cleaning?

Rarely. With a cover in place and regular airing, the silk insert itself may only ever need attention if something serious soaks through. The cover is washed as often as your sheets; the duvet is aired, not washed.

</details>

A washable silk duvet is a real product, but it is a thin summer duvet with its own recipe, not a feature that can be added to a full-weight mulberry silk duvet.
