A Guide to g/m² and Tog

In short

Duvet weight is fill density in grams per square metre. As a starting point: 180 g/m² for rooms at 23 °C and warmer, 320 g/m² between 19 and 23 °C, 500 g/m² between 15 and 19 °C. Tog is the British equivalent and rates insulation only, which is why it cannot tell you how a duvet will handle the moisture you give off during the night.

Duvet weight is the number most people skip. Size is decided by the bed, colour by the room, and weight by whatever the shop happens to have in stock. Yet weight is the choice that decides whether you wake at three in the morning pushing the duvet off, or pulling it back. Below: what duvet weight measures, how g/m² and tog relate, which weight suits which bedroom, and why two duvets rated the same can sleep nothing alike.

What does duvet weight actually measure?

In shortFill density, not how heavy the duvet feels in your hands.

Duvet weight is written in grams per square metre, g/m², sometimes shortened to gsm. It describes how much fill sits in every square metre of the duvet, which means the figure stays the same whether you buy a single or a super king. A larger duvet holds more total grams of fill, but the density, and therefore the warmth, is unchanged.

That distinction is worth holding on to. The number on the label is not the parcel weight and not how heavy the duvet feels on the bed. A well made silk duvet at 500 g/m² can feel lighter in the hand than a synthetic one at half the density, because the way the fill is laid down decides how much air it holds.

Tog is the other figure you will meet, mostly in the UK and Ireland. Tog rates thermal resistance on a scale running from about 1 to 15: the higher the number, the more heat the duvet keeps in. The two are not rivals. One counts the fill, the other rates the result.

The four weights, and the rooms they suit

In shortChoose by bedroom temperature, not by the season printed on the label.

Our duvets come in three single weights plus a four season pair. Every one of them carries the same Grade 6A double-cocoon mulberry silk fill, so the only variable is density. The table below pairs each weight with the room it is built for and its closest tog equivalent.

Four weights, by room temperature

Weight

Room

Suits

Tog equivalent

Summer 180 g/m²

23 °C and warmer

Hot sleepers, warm bedrooms, summer nights and night sweats

about 2.5 to 4.5 tog

Mid season 320 g/m²

19 to 23 °C

Spring through autumn, and mild winters

about 6 to 9 tog

Winter 500 g/m²

15 to 19 °C

Cold sleepers and cool rooms

about 10 to 13 tog

Four seasons 180 + 320 g/m²

Every room, all year

Two duvets that tie into one for deep winter

about 12 to 13.5 tog

In rooms below 15 °C, add a light blanket over the winter weight, or take the four season set for the flexibility. And if your bedroom sits on a boundary, take the lighter weight. A duvet that runs slightly cool is fixed with a blanket. One that runs hot has no remedy at two in the morning.

All four are listed together in the silk duvet collection, where the weight is chosen in the Season menu before the size.

Why two duvets at the same tog sleep differently

In shortTog rates insulation and says nothing about moisture.

Tog is measured dry. It answers one question, how well the duvet slows heat leaving the bed, and it answers it honestly. What it cannot describe is the other half of a warm night: the water vapour your body releases while you sleep.

That vapour has to go somewhere. In a fill that cannot take it up, it condenses in the duvet and against your skin, and the bed turns clammy while the thermometer says nothing has changed. Mulberry silk fibre can hold around 30% of its own weight in moisture and release it again through the same pores, so the damp moves through rather than collecting. Why silk bedding regulates temperature sets out the fibre structure behind that.

This is the practical reason two duvets rated at the same tog can feel like different objects by morning. Tog is a useful shorthand for warmth. It is not a forecast of how you will actually sleep.

Which duvet weight if you wake up sweating?

In shortGo one weight lighter than the season suggests, and read the fill as well as the number.

The common mistake is choosing by calendar rather than by room. A bedroom over a heated flat, or under a roof in a city that holds its warmth, can sit at 23 °C in March. The season says mid weight. The room says summer weight.

If you regularly wake damp, start at 180 g/m² and stay there through spring and autumn. It is the lightest fill we make, close to weightless, and it is the one intended for warm bedrooms, summer nights and night sweats. Dropping a weight costs very little on a cool night, because a blanket fixes it, and it removes the cause on a warm one.

The number is only half the answer. At the same density, a fill that cannot move moisture will still leave you damp by morning. If that is the problem you are solving, the fuller picture is in are mulberry silk duvets good for hot sleepers, and the rest of the bed is covered in our guide to bedding for hot sleepers and night sweats.

If the room itself is the problem rather than the bed, start instead with what to do when it is too hot to sleep, which deals with the hours before you get in.

What if one of you runs warm and the other cold?

In shortTwo single duvets on one bed, each in its own weight.

This is the ordinary arrangement across much of continental Europe, and it is simpler than any compromise weight. Two single duvets sit side by side on a double bed, one at 180 g/m² for whoever runs warm, one at 320 g/m² for whoever does not. Nobody negotiates, and nobody wakes the other pulling the covers back.

A shared cover can still go over both if you prefer the look of a single bed, though most people who try the two duvet arrangement stop bothering after a week.

Which duvet weight do you need for winter?

In short500 g/m² for rooms between 15 and 19 °C.

The 500 g/m² winter weight is the warmest single duvet in the range, made for cool bedrooms and for people who sleep cold. The four season set reaches the same 500 g/m² by tying the 180 and the 320 together, which is the more flexible route if your bedroom swings through the year.

Silk insulates efficiently for its thickness, so each weight sits warmer than the same number in a bulkier fill. That is worth knowing before buying up a weight on the assumption that heavier is safer. It usually is not, and over-warming a bedroom is the most common reason a duvet ends up on the floor by morning.

Questions we hear most

<details>

What duvet weight is best for summer?

For a bedroom at 23 degrees or warmer, 180 g/m2, which is roughly 2.5 to 4.5 tog. It is the lightest fill we make and the one intended for warm rooms, summer nights and night sweats. If your bedroom stays warm through spring and autumn, there is no reason to change up.

</details>
<details>

What tog is a 320 g/m2 duvet?

Roughly 6 to 9 tog. Silk insulates efficiently for its thickness, so the range is wider than a single number suggests. Silk is not tog rated, so treat the figure as a guide for comparing duvets rather than as a specification.

</details>
<details>

Is 500 g/m2 too warm for a heated bedroom?

Often, yes. The 500 g/m2 winter weight is built for rooms between 15 and 19 degrees. If your heating holds the bedroom at 20 degrees or above through winter, the 320 g/m2 mid season weight is usually the better choice.

</details>
<details>

Does a heavier duvet mean better quality?

No. Weight describes warmth, not grade. A 180 g/m2 duvet and a 500 g/m2 duvet from the same range hold the same fill and the same shell, and only the density differs. Quality sits in the fibre grade, the length of the strands and the shell, not in how much of it there is.

</details>
<details>

Can one duvet weight work all year?

In a room that stays between 19 and 23 degrees, the 320 g/m2 mid season weight will cover most of the year. If your bedroom swings more than that, the four season set is the honest answer: 180 alone in summer, 320 in spring and autumn, both tied together for winter.

</details>
<details>

How do I find out my bedroom temperature?

A small room thermometer left on the bedside table overnight is enough. Read it when you wake rather than at bedtime, because a closed bedroom warms up through the night. The overnight figure is the one that should decide the weight.

</details>

Duvet weight is a smaller decision than it looks, as long as it is made against the room rather than the season. Measure the bedroom, take the lighter option when you are between two, and let the fibre deal with the moisture. If you are still weighing silk against down, wool or synthetic before any of this matters, start with is a silk duvet worth it.
